CLUSTER

Cluster 71. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

According to "The Wire", the British bible of musical excellence, Cluster 71 is one of the "One Hundred Records That Set The World On Fire". Very few albums from Germany can lay claim to this honour. The album is a monster: Cluster's debut work from the year 1971 (actually just called Cluster) contains a mere three tracks (untitled) and is quite an ordeal for untrained ears – back then, at least. Yet the album pointed the way forward like no other electronic opus. First reissue with original Philips running order!

ROEDELIUS

Selbstportrait. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

Alongside his ongoing work with Cluster and Harmonia, Hans-Joachim Roedelius amassed an almost incalculable number of musical notations during his time in the idyllic Weser Uplands. Fleeting sketches, spontaneous improvisations, implied miniatures, rough compositions – Roedelius recorded virtually every idea he came up with outside the studio sessions on his Revox A77 reel to reel; with the basic intention of capturing his moments of inspiration, he simply let the tape run as he played around on the Farfisa organ. Sound quality was not his prime concern, as he was not as yet entertaining any notion of releasing the results. First 1:1 reissue ever!

ROEDELIUS

Selbstportrait II. CD, vinyl (180g), download

With "Selbstportrait I" (see above) Roedelius gave unequivocal confirmation that he no longer was treading the hitherto common paths of electronic music. "Selbstportrait II" corroborated the findings: for Roedelius, electronics would no longer be a means of creating abstract, noise-like music in the future, nor of generating utopian, mechanical rhythmic structures. His own utopia was quite a different place, more in keeping with his own personality and view of the world. Hence both self-portraits, in particular "Selbstportrait II", are programmatic. This album has never been released completely before! Includes five tracks never released on CD!

MOEBIUS + BEERBOHM

Strange Music. CD, vinyl (180g), download

Dieter Moebius is one of the most important protagonists of avant-garde electronic music in Germany (He is/was part of Cluster and Harmonia). He recorded two albums with the bassist Gerd Beerbohm in 1982 and 1983 – electronic avant-garde pop in its most rigorous form. Beerbohm turned out to be the perfect musical foil for Moebius, affording him free rein, in the very best sense of the expression, to bring his concept of pop music to life. Mastered from original tapes, liner notes by Asmus Tietchens.

MOEBIUS+BEERBOHM

Double Cut. CD, vinyl (180g), download

The second album by Dieter Moebius and bassist Gerd Beerbohm was released 1984. It bore the same distinctive hallmarks as its predecessor, but this time around, the two musicians had simplified matters significantly. This was not simplification due to a lack of inspiration, however, but a masterful concentration on what really counts in pop music: rhythm. Mastered from original tapes, liner notes by Asmus Tietchens.

MOEBIUS

Blue Moon. Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

"Blue Moon" was released at a time when electronically created pop music was no longer perceived as exotic. It was new music, free of the ballast of the 1970s, minimalist and uncluttered. Pioneer of electronic avantgarde music Dieter Moebius, a constant "simplifier" in the Cluster/Harmonia family, made a particular virtue of this simplicity on "Blue Moon", resulting in eleven wonderfully measured miniatures, rhythmic, harmonic textures of exceptional aural transparency. Mastered from original tapes, liner notes by Asmus Tietchens. File under: Krautronic

ROEDELIUS

Lustwandel. CD, vinyl (180g), download

This album saw Hans-Joachim Roedelius fulfil a dream he had long since cherished. A series of chamber music pieces, with grand piano solos taking centre stage in some places, archaised percussion patterns in others. "Lustwandel" represents a logical progression, following on from Jardin au fou (rereleased on Bureau B in 2009), recorded in Peter Baumann's Paragon studios (Tangerine Dream).

The Diary Of The Unforgotten/Selbstportrait VI. CD, vinyl (180g), download

A beautiful collection of recordings from 1972 to 1978, first released in 1990 (with different artwork). "Selbstportrait VI" contains compositions Roedelius did in addition to his work with Cluster, Harmonia and Brian Eno in the legendary Forst years. In the booklet Roedelius looks back on this personal and artistical important period of his life. He explains the magic of the idyllic place and its influence on his music.

MOEBIUS & PLANK

Rastakraut Pasta. CD, vinyl (180g), download

Dieter Moebius (one of the most important protagonists of avant-garde electronic music in Germany, part of Harmonia and Cluster) and Conny Plank (the most legendary sound engineer of the German Underground) made a congenial pair as musicians. An enigmatic form of pop music came into being on "Rastakraut Pasta", a breakneck, elegant mix of diverse elements: a touch of Krautrock, some avant-garde pop, new German electronica, even sporadic echoes of reggae. Recorded in in Conny's studio in 1980; guest musician: Holger Czukay (Can)

MOEBIUS & PLANK

Material. CD, vinyl (180g), download

On their second album (recorded 1981), Moebius and Plank ventured far, far away from the double coordinates of the Harmonia world and pop music cosmos. "Material" saw them generate a form of genre-busting electronic music, more radical than anything one might have expected to come out of Germany, not even from the likes of Cluster or Harmonia.

Ninca is a singer, a songwriter, a producer, and a musician at the same time. And she explores the facets of electronic pop music in all their variations. Her music mixes a resolute pop approach to an experimental sound process witch glitch, clicks & cuts, dreamlike melodies and fairy elements, using voices, synthesizing, sound design, layerings, acoustic instruments along with electronic sounds/devices and field recordings. "Where on earth does Roedelius find such a beautiful array of notes?", Asmus Tietchens wonders in the liner notes to this exquisit reissue. We don't know the answer but we do know that these easy and quiet analog-electronic music miniatures from 1981 will enchant you. PHANTOM BAND

Phantom Band. CD, vinyl (180g), download

The first band of Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit after Can split up in 1979. The first line-up (1980) included top musicians such as Helmut Zerlett (e.g. Dunkelziffer, Unknown Cases), Rosko Gee (Traffic, Can), Dominik von Senger (e.g. Damo Suzuki Band, Dunkelziffer), Olek Gelba, and Holger Czukay (Can) as guest musician. The Phantom Band mixes Can-style monotonic polyrhythms with afrobeat, funk, jazz, disco, reggae, and dub. A nearly forgotten exciting musical experience!

PHANTOM BAND

Freedom Of Speech. CD, vinyl (180g), download

The second album of the Phantom Band is quite different to the predecessor. The line-up features the spoken word performer Sheldon Ancel on the microphone instead of bass player Rosko Gee. Whilst the debut album revealed many Caribbean or African influences and a generally positive frame of mind, "Freedom of Speech" is a somewhat darker avant-garde rock manifesto, interspersed with individual dub or reggae pieces. All they have in common are Jaki Liebezeit's inimitable monotone polyrhythmic drumming and the Phantom Band's predilection for hypnotic (Jamaican) grooves.

It can also lay claim to the rare achievement of appearing regularly on NDW (German New Wave) compilations and proving equally popular in the underground scene.
