CLUSTER

Cluster 71 (50th Anniversary Edition). Out November 26, 2021

According to "The Wire", the British bible of musical excellence, Cluster 71 is one of the "One Hundred Records That Set The World On Fire". Very few albums from Germany can lay claim to this honour. The album is a monster: Cluster's debut work from the year 1971 (actually just called Cluster) contains a mere three tracks (untitled) and is quite an ordeal for untrained ears – back then, at least. Yet the album pointed the way forward like no other electronic opus. For the 50th anniversary of this influential album, we're releasing Cluster 71 as a special LP version: 500 copies, numbered, gatefold and 180g vinyl.

DUNKELZIFFER

Songs For Everyone. Out November 19, 2021

After Bureau B started its Dunkelziffer retrospective with the albums "Colors And Soul" and "In The Night", we are excited to make the band's last studio album "Songs For Everyone", which was released in 1989, finally available again. Displaced from their spiritual home (the Stollwerck complex had been levelled in 1987) and robbed of the collaborative exchange it facilitated, Dunkelziffer took a different tack on 'Songs For Everyone', slimming down to a sextet with a newly streamlined sound. Olek Gelba and Reiner Linke remained in the percussive pocket, laying the foundation for Von Senger and Schubert's melodic prowess, with newcomers Jorge Guarin Quintaro and Irene Lorenz breathing fresh air into keys and vocals respectively.

V.A.

Eins und Zwei und Drei und Vier - Deutsche Experimentelle Pop-Musik 1980-86. Out October 1, 2021

Do not adjust your sets. Take a step back from the tracking. This is the sound of Germany's musical youth let loose on cheap synths and pawnshop guitars. A record of a disparate scene of squat pop-stars, art-school upstarts and committed non-musicians who redefined German music in the first half of the 1980s.

Destiny Waiving. Out September 24, 2021

Despite it's extended conception, most tracks where completed during 2017, in part informed by improvisational sets in London, Dublin and St James' Church in Birmingham (as part of the Seventh Wave electronica festival).

NIKLAS WANDT

Solar Müsli. Out September 17, 2021

Drummer, percussionist, producer, radio journalist and DJ, Niklas Wandt's musical path can be traced back to his childhood, signposted by jazz and psychedelia. He has presented WDR 3's Jazz & World programme for a number of years, performed live and recorded albums with bands like Oracles and Stabil Elite. In 2018 Niklas Wandt and Wolf Müller released the highly acclaimed "Instrumentalmusik von der Mitte der World" album (on Growing Bin Records). Wandt also founded the synth-pop project Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge with Joshua Gottmanns. Now, Niklas Wandt is about to release a quite astounding album under his own name on Bureau B. The full scope of influences gathered and absorbed over the years coalesce on Solar Müsli – all the pieces of the puzzle fall effortlessly into place. This is not formalism at work, but an exhilarating, freely flowing album which started out as an exercise in improvised percussion and developed into a multidimensional journey, at times both introverted and ebullient.

LOVE-SONGS UND U.SCHÜTTE

[Spannende Musik]. Out August 27, 2021

Hamburg's post-kraut-electro trio Love-Songs and Ulf Schütte (Datashock, Phantom Horse, Little Whirls) have formed a group named Love-Songs & U. Schütte for the duration of one long-playing record. This body of work bears the modest title [Spannende Musik] – an attribution which sounds not in the least bit pejorative to those with no skin in the game: "Yes, it really is exciting music!"

V.A. KIOSQUE OF ARROWS 2

Compiled by Tolouse Low Trax. Out August 20, 2021

It gives us immense pleasure to present this very special release: "Kiosque Of Arrows 2" is Detlef Weinrich's (a.k.a. Tolouse Low Trax) first compilation for Bureau B. Echoing the spirit of the legendary samplers found on Les Disques Du Crépuscule or Made To Measure, this hybrid journal not only collates unusual pieces of music - rare and undiscovered pearls from the experimental underground of the early 1980s through to contemporary unreleased recordings - it also represents a reflective collage of cut-ups, observations and memories in the neverending search for inexplicable beauty.

SØLYST

Spring. Out August 13, 2021

Spring is Thomas Klein's fourth Sølyst release on Bureau B, gleaned from material spanning the past three years. The time he has spent with these pieces has been time well spent. In revisiting them, he has posed new questions, rearranged and reworked some elements, dismissed or discarded others. The process of reappraisal has seen certain passages expanded upon, others pared away or refined.

DUNKELZIFFER

In The Night. Out July 16, 2021

Barely pausing for breath after 1983's Colours And Soul, Dunkelziffer delivered In The Night the following year, their revolving line-up prompting an evolving sound. Though the playful elements of their debut remained through a trio of sun-blushed dubbers, the album also housed the ensemble's most dense, intense and serious tracks to date.

Welcome to the world of Dunkelziffer – a hip hive mind who buzzed away in the post-industrial decay of Köln's Stollwerck complex. Taking a radical approach to sound, style and group dynamics, this loose collective of musicians and artists blazed an experimental trail through the 80s, offering an alternative vision of German pop fit for a decade of constant change.

HEIKO MAILE

Demo Tapes 1984-86. Out June 25, 2021

Most of the tracks on this album were recorded with a basic stereo (2-track) cassette recorder. The studio set-up looked more or less like this: a drum computer (no Midi) and a sequencer were connected to each other and synchronized rhythmically. I crafted melodic sequences and rhythms and usually transposed them to the desired pitch manually, using the keyboards. Other live instruments were played over the top. Then everything, the sum of all the sound sources, was put together in a kind of "live recording" with the aid of a mixing desk. Just a single mistake would mean having to start all over again. Reconfiguring many of the sounds once the controls had already been adjuste was a painstaking process. I ended up with heaps of cassettes, often featuring seemingly endless versions and variations of the same track. Demo Tapes 1984-86 by Heiko Maile includes a selection from his beginnings of electronic music and the bizarre sonic worlds he inhabited.

Die Fische from Ratingen pressed their 1986 album "Eine Nacht in Cairo" in a small private edition. Nowadays, collectors over the world search for precious copies of the "Eine Nacht in Cairo" LP. Therefore, Bureau B are delighted to announce a reissue of this wonderfully rapturous album, somewhere between leftfield synth-pop and post-punk.

SORBET

This Was Paradise. Out June 4, 2021

Irish producer Chris W Ryan (Just Mustard, NewDad and his own Robocobra Quartet) began releasing music under the moniker SORBET in 2020 with the express intention to cleanse the palate; both for the listener and himself. Exploring freely across genre bounds, the world of SORBET is informed by electronic music just as much as classical and alt-pop, with nods to artists like Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, Kate Bush and David Byrne. Inspired by this freedom of creativity, the debut SORBET album This Was Paradise features a host of collaborators orbiting around Chris' nucleus, in which he flexes his ability as a composer and technician in equal measure.

P!OFF?

P!OFF?. Out May 7, 2021

With the self-titled album P!OFF? from the Munich band, Bureau B is releasing one of the most sought-after records of the experimental Neue Deutsche Welle. Released in 1982 by Transparent, the album achieved some respectable successes at the time, but quickly disappeared in the flood of NDW releases of the early 1980s. Songs like the boogie track "Mein Walkman ist kaputt" or the enchanting slow disco jam "In der Nacht" are still very popular among diggers and DJs to this day. We are happy to finally make this rarity available again.

Die Gruppe. Out April 30, 2021

Terrible times indeed. Discerning pop music fans will therefore be more than pleased that intellectual rock darlings Ja, Panik are back after a seven-year hiatus. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, given that in their 2016 band autobiography Futur II—published to mark their tenth anniversary—the Berlin-based quartet of Andreas Spechtl (vocals, guitar), Stefan Pabst (bass), Sebastian Janata (drums) and Laura Landergott (keyboards & guitar), pretty much announced their permanent dissolution.

Der Plan

Save Your Software. Out April 16, 2021

Shrouded in myth, 'Save Your Software' is the long-lost album by Der Plan. Back in the mid-1980s, Moritz Reichelt, Kurt Dahlke (Pyrolator) and Frank Fenstermacher initiated the Fanuks project with the aim of making themselves immortal as Mensch-Maschinen or Man-Machines. "Fanuks" would produce music for all eternity, embarking on a never-ending world tour. Eternity would ultimately prove to be out of their reach due to various technical hurdles, but it is fair to say that Der Plan were always way ahead of their time. By the end of the decade, the Fanuks, or their respective human alter egos, had crafted six pieces. These were only rediscovered in 2020 during a thorough inspection of the Ata Tak/Der Plan archives. Reichelt, Dahlke and Fenstermacher augmented their six visionary masterpieces with three tracks based on compositions from the year 1989. Now it works at least a little with eternity, even if 'only' in the form of the legendary productions that have finally been made available to the public.

Jimi Tenor

Deep Sound Learning (1993 - 2000). Out April 9, 2021

Bureau B are excited to announce the arrival of a new Jimi Tenor double album! Following on from last year's NY, Hel, Barca compilation which showcased Tenor's early works and cuts from his first six albums, Deep Sound Learning shines a spotlight on unreleased tracks from 1993 to the year 2000. This intensely prolific period saw Tenor send countless DAT tapes to Warp Records, his label at the time, who stacked up the recordings in the office safe. Some of the songs preserved on those DATs made their way onto various Tenor LPs – whilst others remained unreleased to this day. Jimi Tenor and Bureau B have retrieved said tapes and crafted a double album (CD/LP) of previously unheard tracks in what is much more than a simple archival exposition.

Michel Banabila

Wah-Wah Whispers. Out March 19, 2021

Ever since he released his music in the early '80s, Michel Banabila has been hard to pinpoint to a specific genre or style. His musical output includes jazz, experimental cut-up electronics, world music (especially influenced by the Fourth World music as developed by Jon Hassell), New Age, eclectic pop tunes, music for dance or other stage projects, and soundtracks for TV productions. Wah-Wah Whispers focuses on Banabila's more recent output. It is a collection of works showcasing many facets of his music: a journey visiting the minimal and cinematic sample scape in the opener Take Me There, a robotic reggae-like rhythm (Tic Tac), contemplative ambient / fourth world scenes evolving into a downright funky beat (Hidden Story), the synth version of Secunde, and more. The album ends with a kaleidoscope of atmospheres gradually building up to a noise climax in Narita (the only collaboration track on the album, with Rutger Zuydervelt / Machinefabriek).

Mapstation

My Frequencies, When We. Out February 26, 2021

The title stumbles along, much like the rhythms gathered here. "My Frequencies, When We" is the eighth Mapstation album Stefan Schneider has released since 2000. Hailing from Düsseldorf, the electronic music artist and producer finds inspiration in African and South American folklore, dub and, naturally, Krautrock, taking his time to process his responses in a consistently thoughtful manner, never resorting to cliché.

Camera

Prosthuman. Out February 19, 2021

With the band's tenth anniversary in their viewfinder, CAMERA are all set to push the button on "Prosthuman", their fifth studio album in February 2021. As befits an age in which realities can change in the blink of an eye, from one day to the next, the Berlin band never tire of changing themselves, their music or personnel. As Karlheinz Stockhausen noted: "New methods change the experience. New experiences change man." Taking this as their lead, Michael Drummer (the drummer) and CAMERA surprise us once more on "Prosthuman" as they reinvent and reformulate their sound without sacrificing the project's identity which has matured over the past decade. Less surprising is the fact that some record stores give CAMERA their own section, alongside Krautrock pioneers like NEU!, Can and La Düsseldorf.
