CLUSTER

Cluster II. Out December 9, 2022

Cluster can be counted among the most important international protagonists of the electronic avant-garde. Some credit them with having invented ambient music, others as pioneers of synthesizer pop, whilst to some they are firmly embedded in the krautrock universe. There is some truth in all of these notions. Cluster (or Kluster as they were in the beginning) were founded in 1970 in Berlin by Conrad Schnitzler, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius. A change in direction and musical differences moved Moebius and Roedelius to split from Schnitzler after which the duo recorded 10 regular studio albums between 1971 and 2009. Their debut album ("Cluster 71") was in Wire Magazine's "One Hundred Records That Set The World On Fire" list. Follow up, Cluster II, has now reached it's 50th anniversary and to celebrate bureau b are releasing a limited anniversary edition, vinyl only, gatefold sleeve limited to a 1000 copies.

MARTIN REV

To Live. Out December 2, 2022

American indie label File 13 Records released what was already Martin Rev's sixth solo album in the autumn of 2003. The previous year, Rev and his musical partner Alan Vega had struck out in a new direction on their "American Supreme" album and Rev's solo works continued in a similar vein. If "Strangeworld" from the year 2000 actually felt more like a timeless abstract of Martin Rev's entire spectrum of musical influences, "To Live", three years later, introduces more contemporary elements, including guitar samples for the first time.

MARTIN REV

Les Nymphes. Out December 2, 2022

A Martin Rev album is always liable to spring a surprise. Think of the rough guitars which unexpectedly appeared on his 2003 release "To Live" instead of synthesizers. "Les Nymphes", which followed in 2008, saw Rev return to dream-laden melodic miniatures, but came from a resolutely more radical place than its predecessors.

TO ROCOCO ROT

The John Peel Sessions. Out November 4, 2022

Without a doubt, To Rococo Rot are an exception within the German music landscape. From 1995 until they broke up in 2014, the group around Robert Lippok, Ronald Lippok and Stefan Schneider researched a unique sound between electronic music, ambient, post-melancholy and the further development of a new, free music like krautrock. Pitchfork described their sound as "unmistakably digital, yet 100% human". With releases on labels such as Kitty-Yo, City Slang and Mute Records as well as concerts worldwide, the band has built a remarkable reputation. The trio was invited three times by John Peel to record radio sessions in the BBC studios. Bureau B is pleased to make the recordings from these three sessions from the years 1997 and 1999 available on record for the first time, which, in addition to the live versions of selected album tracks, also contains exclusive, unreleased songs.

Eins und Zwei und Drei und Vier Vol 2 - Deutsche Experimentelle Pop-Musik 1978 - 1987. Out October 21, 2022

For their second foray into the fringes of German pop, Bureau B delve deeper than before, raiding cassette culture, 7" obscurities and overlooked album cuts to further frame this free-thinking strain of sonic expression. Starting the count from punk's year zero, this set sees a newly liberated generation get weird and wild with anything they could lay their hands on, delivering demented, detuned and disorienting tracks brimming with DIY spirit.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER & BAAL & MORTIMER

Con-Struct. Out September 30, 2022

The German pioneer of electronic music Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011) amassed a vast archive of sounds for use in combination with each other in live performances. In 2011 the idea came up of con-structing new compositions, not remixes, from this material. The Con-Struct series was born. This release features con-structions by Baal & Mortimer who writes about it in the linernotes: It was exciting to break open existing material, peeling something out of the past and thus transgressing it and opening portals. Or like Wolfgang Seidel, a fellow musician of Schnitzler, quoted to me from Schnitzler's archive: "Music is not the sound waves that reach our ears, but what we make of them."

SPRUNG AUS DEN WOLKEN

Sprung aus den Wolken. Out September 23, 2022

The Berlin project Sprung Aus Den Wolken was part of the "Geniale Dilletanten" movement in the early 1980s, along with Einstürzende Neubauten and Mechanik Destrüktiw Komandöh. The band first released an EP on ZickZack in 1981, followed by further releases on the band's own record label Faux Pas in 1982 and 1983, then on the French outlet Les Disques Du Soleil Et De L'Acier until 1991. The track Pas Attendre was part of the soundtrack of Wim Wender's movie Der Himmel über Berlin and thus became an underground hit. Founder of the band Kiddy Citny is also a painter. His paintings of the Berlin Wall have been exhibited around the world and are now in private collections in the US, France and Japan. Bureau B is pleased to finally make the long out-of-print, self-titled album from 1982 available again. Carefully remastered, with reconstructed original artwork, numerous photos and liner notes by Alexander Hacke.

KRISHNA GOINEAU

I Need A Slow. Out September 16, 2022

Krishna Goineau was born in Sri Lanka in 1963. He spent his youth in the 1970s in Barcelona, where he met Javier Hernando in 1978 to found the post-punk group Xeerox. In 1981 Goinau moved to Düsseldorf, where he met Christo Haas and Beate Bartel. He became the singer of the joint project Liaisons Dangereuses and lent his unmistakable voice to the band's big hit ("Los Niños Del Parque"). At the end of the 1980s Krishna Goineau lived in Brussels and became the singer and keyboardist of the groups Metropakt and Veldorome, together with Jodie Guber. Meanwhile Goineau lives very secluded in the south of France and concentrates mainly on his painting. In 2007/2008 he worked at home with analog synthesizers on a series of songs that to this day have never been released. Electronic cut-ups and haunting compositions that sound as contemporary as they are detached from any zeitgeist. Bureau B is very pleased to finally make a selection of these lost recordings avaialble with this collection "I Need A Slow".

DIE WELTTRAUMFORSCHER

Liederbuch. Out August 19, 2022

When the Welttraumforscher (world dream explorer) started their journey on July 14, 1981, it was not foreseeable that it would last so long. For over 40 years now, Christian Pfluger from Zurich has been working with drawings, texts and songs on the idiosyncratic and fascinating universe of the imaginary trio. This has resulted in numerous cassettes, LP and CD releases. Most recently, a two-part retrospective was released in the spring of 2021 on Hamburg's Bureau B, giving an insight into the wonderfully rapturous dream world of the project, which despite the continuous work remains something of an insider tip to this day. With their new collection "Liederbuch", which will be released in August, the Welttraumforscher are going on tour for the first time in many years. When the Welttraumforscher open their songbook, they are met, as in a pop-up book, by the fictional friends they have invented and sung to on their journey through 40 years: the captain to the soul Kip Eulenmeister (the owl master) and the crop circle researcher (iguana) Leguan Rätselmann, the insect twins Brtz and Brxl, the space travelers Lia and Mira from the Nordkristall (northern crystal), Ohm Olunde from the silent forests and the incredible dark pilots.

FAUST

The Faust Tapes. Out August 12, 2022

There's something perversely fabulous about the thought of this warped masterwork wandering into 60,000 unsuspecting British homes in 1973. Faust's second-and-a-half album hit the shops to celebrate their signing to the nascent Virgin Records, who were looking to take advantage of the zeitgeist for German music at that time. Undeterred by the fact the band's unwillingness to engage with the commercial landscape had seen them dropped from Polydor, Branson and co cooked up a suitably spectacular marketing strategy, selling the LP for 49p, the bargain price of a single. Shoppers flocked in their thousands to grab a copy, raced home and then spent the next forty five minutes checking their tracking, banging the speakers and blowing the needle, all to no avail. Do not adjust your set – This is Faust.

MOEBIUS

Solo Works. Kollektion 7. Compiled by Asmus Tietchens. Out July 22, 2022

Dieter Moebius is one of the most important protagonists of avant-garde electronic music in Germany. Alongside his bands Kluster/Cluster and Harmonia, he participated in numerous collaborations (with the likes of Brian Eno and Mani Neumeier/Guru Guru). Seven years after Moebius passed away in July 2015, Asmus Tietchens, one of his musical companions, compiled this collection for Bureau B – he concentrated on his solo works "as they offer the clearest insight into his personality and inventive potential".

The Psychedelic Side of Kosmische Musik. Fellow humans, Bureau B invite you on an expedition to Silberland, a singular span of spacetime created by Germany's sonic futurists of the seventies and eighties. Embracing the early electronics and tape experiments of the sixties' avant-garde, these artists aimed to boldly go, eschewing small steps for giant leaps into a nebulous and novel sound.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER & WOLF SEQUENZA

Consequenz II. Out May 27, 2022

Composer and conceptual artist Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011) was one of the most influential figures of the electronic avant-garde in Germany. In 1967/68, the Joseph Beuys student founded the Zodiak Free Arts Lab, which became a playground for Berlin subculture. In addition to numerous solo releases Schnitzler was also involved in various band formations not least Tangerine Dream and Kluster. Representing another of his musical landmarks are the "Consequenz" releases. "Consequenz II" emerged from a collaboration with Wolfgang Seidel alias Wolf Sequenza, and is the follow-up project to "Consequenz" which was a low-budget production that had an overriding aim of liberating music from its elitist circles in a "Beuys-ian" sense. "Consequenz II" returned to the theme with electronic apparatus that professionalised the sound but by no means reduced the fun he found in experimentation.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER

Con 84.

In addition to many other musical stations, bustling Schnitzler was a member of the Kraut-Electronic formations Tangerine Dream and Kluster. Numerous solo releases complete his extensive oeuvre. One of them is "CON 84", probably his most composed work, on which he challenges the traditions of so-called Ernste Musik. The result is a complex electronic sound structure that marks a break with Schnitzler's previous work in a subversive flirtation with traditionalism.

JIMI TENOR

Multiversum. Out May 20, 2022

Jimi Tenor has always been something of a Renaissance man. On leaving his Finnish homeland for New York in the early 1990s, and later as he travelled through Europe, he quickly discovered what he calls his ikigai, his great joy in life: to record and produce music in DIY mode at home with the most rudimentary of means, spontaneously and intuitively. In more than 30 years of making music, Tenor has remained true to his ideal, whether as a solo artist on his early electronic albums or in the widely diverse collaborations and constellations which followed (with the likes of Tony Allen, Kabu Kabu, Abdissa Assefa). "Multiversum" is now his third album for Hamburg-based label Bureau B.

RICHARD VON DER SCHULENBURG (RVDS)

Cosmic Diversity. Out April 29, 2022

Hamburg synthesist Richard von der Schulenburg returns to Bureau B with the follow up to last year's Moods & Dances 2021, harnessing hardware crunch, cryptic found sounds and field recordings on a mission for Cosmic Diversity. Taking inspiration from the haunting electronica of BoC and Plaid, refracted here through the half-life of a Zeiss lens, RVDS navigates the musical multiverse, simultaneously straddling electro, IDM, kosmische and dub across eight exploratory compositions. Created during lockdown as an escape from the insular, this LP looks outward but reaches inwards with emotive melodies at every turn.

JÖRG THOMASIUS

Acht Gesänge der schwarzen Hunde (Experimenteller Elektronik-Underground DDR 1980-1990). Out April 15, 2022

The second part of the series "Experimental Electronic Underground GDR" is dedicated to the artist Jörg Thomasius. Also known as Tomato, Thomasius was born in East Berlin in 1955 and was inspired by the progressive sounds of the early 1970s, including the burgeoning electronic sounds emanating from the yet distant and unreachable West Berlin. The material gathered on this collection, "Acht Gesänge der schwarzen Hunde" (Eight Songs of the Black Dogs), comes from three sources: the cassette "Schwarze Hände" (Black Hands) that documents productions from 1980-1985, Thomasius' own Kröten Kassetten label's "Gesänge der Komparsen" release (Songs of the Extras) from 1989 and "After Eight" from 1990, which was released on his Tomato label after Thomasius left the band Das Freie Orchester. It encapsulates the whole range of Thomasius, who saw himself more as an experimental DIY sound producer and less as a musician, in a selection that spans ten years: from spherical, elegiac floating sounds to whimsical gems of high playfulness that interweave obscure snippets of language with weird minimal constructs.

Also recommended: Verbrecher Verlag will publish a book called "Magnetizdat DDR" that also discusses GDR's underground cassette scene. Edited by Alexander Pehlemann, Ronald Galenza and Robert Miessner and released in June 2022.

DIETER ZOBEL

MEZ 31,00 (Experimenteller Elektronik-Underground DDR 1989). Out April 15, 2022

Bureau B presented a compilation of experimental, electronic music from the GDR's underground cassette scene in 2017 under the title "Magnetband" and now the Hamburg label is following up this thematic focus with the release of two East Berlin artist retrospectives: "Acht Gesänge der schwarzen Hunde" – a compilation of Jörg Thomasius productions from 1980 to 1990 – and "MEZ 31,00" by Dieter Zobel aka Didier Leboz, recorded in 1988 and originally released on Thomasius' Kröten Kassetten label in 1989 – a year of great upheaval in Berlin. Both were members of the legendary avant-garde group Das Freie Orchester. Dieter Zobel's "MEZ 31,00" is one of his many solo releases and also one of his most impressive. Recorded on the Yamaha CX5M, bought with money from his (West German) grandmother's inheritance, the pieces, laid over each other in several loops of the same sequence of varying length, produce a kind of concentrated polyrhythm that sometimes makes one think of ambient music being created in Japan at the same time.

Also recommended: Verbrecher Verlag will publish a book called "Magnetizdat DDR" that also discusses GDR's underground cassette scene. Edited by Alexander Pehlemann, Ronald Galenza and Robert Miessner and released in June 2022.

ETIENNE JAUMET & FABRIZIO RAT

Etienne Jaumet & Fabrizio Rat. Out March 18, 2022

On their self-titled debut album Etienne Jaumet and Fabrizio Rat, both trained pianists, re-invent their favourite instrument to make us hear it in a totally new way. While the former creates unusual sounds thanks to the rhythmic machines that accompany his piano, the latter uses this classical and romantic instrument par excellence to explore the techno sphere. "The basic idea of our duo is to confront the harmonic richness of the piano and the synthesizer through rhythm. To explore our interactions through live music. To develop new atmospheres thanks to the evocative power of unusual sounds. Somewhere between ambient and sound experimentation...'

GOD IS GOD

Metamorphoses. Out February 18, 2022

Metamorphoses is the debut album by electronic duo God is God for Hamburg-based imprint Bureau B. The duo consists of Turkish musician, producer and Kinship label founder Etkin Çekin and Belarussian multi-instrumentalist, composer singer and Not Not Fun alumni Galina Ozeran who started making music after a chance meeting in Berlin in 2015. Metamorphoses is the product of their second ever improvisational encounter: an undulating, avant-pop journey of low-BPM twists and turns guided by Ozeran's synthesizers, Russian and English vocals and Çekin's ethereal production and guitar sensibility. Central to the album's musical narrative are both contemporary dancefloor-adjacent electronics and Eastern European and Turkish psychedelic electronic traditions – all filtered through the prism of Çekin and Ozeran's respective musical histories.

RICHARD PINHAS

Iceland. Out February 11, 2022

Richard Pinhas' album Iceland was first released in 1979 and is his third solo work, also the first after the split from Heldon. This album seems like a long, inward-looking journey and is like a kind of counter-point to the expansive sci-fi worlds and the bombastic prog of Heldon; on Iceland you will find long, sublime tracks next to short, rougher sketches. Echo guitars, rhythm machines and the washed-out warmth of analog synthesizer sounds create a very peculiar, chilling atmosphere. Bureau B is grateful to make this Richard Pinhas album finally available again.

KREIDLER

Spells And Daubs. Out January 28, 2022

In a year of the moon, Kreidler have produced the album SPELLS AND DAUBS. In a year of the moon – and in a year with 13 moons. Such years are known for not being the most comfortable. In September 2020 the band met for exploratory sessions and initial recordings in Düsseldorf, in the familiar settings of the Kabawil Theater. That already has a certain tradition. The impetus this time was a solitary gig in the conspicuously spacious surroundings of the (former) Philipshalle. In a year that threw everyone back on themselves. Over the winter Kreidler worked remotely, sifting through the material, arranging the pieces, adding textures and contours. They met again in the spring of 2021 for further recordings at the Uhrwerk Orange studio in Hilden, near Düsseldorf. That, too, has a certain tradition. From fifteen pieces they filtered out ten, and thus held an album in their hands. Then – and this is new – they took it to London, to Peter Walsh, so that he could mix the tracks.
